Romania Sets Ambitious Energy Goals in New Strategy for 2025-2050

The Romanian Government has adopted the "Energy Strategy of Romania 2025-2035, with the perspective of 2050," aiming for a sustainable and competitive energy sector. Key objectives include energy security, low-carbon energy production, efficiency, universal access, market competitiveness, smart grid development, and digitalization.

A centerpiece of the strategy is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 87% by 2035 and the achievement of a 44% share of renewable energy in total consumption. By 2050, renewables are expected to constitute 73% of energy consumption. The country plans to end natural gas dependency by 2027 and coal usage by 2032, with solid fossil fuel imports ceasing by 2035.

The plan highlights increasing renewable energy capacity, with 19.5 GW from wind and solar by 2035 and a total installed capacity of 40 GW, 80% of which will be renewables. It also targets a storage capacity of 2,000 MW by 2030, the integration of 5% biomethane in the gas network by 2030 (scaling to 10% by 2050), and the development of innovative nuclear technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

Infrastructure optimization, energy poverty reduction, and Energy Autonomous Villages (SAE) are other priorities. Additionally, by 2036, green gases like hydrogen will comprise at least 50% of gas capacities, with universal access to electricity ensured by 2035.

The strategy supports the local production and recycling of batteries, photovoltaic panels, and uranium for nuclear needs while guaranteeing energy security for Moldova.
