European Wind Energy Stocks Plunge After Trump’s Anti-Wind Remarks

European wind energy companies faced a sharp drop in stock values on Wednesday following remarks by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who announced plans to halt the construction of new wind turbines.

"We will try to implement a policy to stop building windmills," Trump stated during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Tuesday.

The fallout was immediate. Shares of Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems and wind energy developer Orsted fell by approximately 7% on the stock exchanges. Trump criticized wind energy as too costly, heavily reliant on subsidies, and lacking public support.

These comments add pressure on an industry already struggling with rising interest rates that have driven up development costs. In 2023, Orsted reported $4 billion in losses and canceled two offshore wind projects near New Jersey's coast.

Despite challenges, wind energy has grown substantially in the U.S., increasing from 2.4 GW in 2000 to 150 GW in April 2024, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). In the same month, wind-generated electricity surpassed coal for the first time.
