Volkswagen Expands Green Energy Use with New Solar Farm in Poland
Quanta Energy is constructing a second photovoltaic farm at the Volkswagen factory in Września, near Poznań, Poland. This marks one of the largest on-site solar projects in Europe. Earlier this year, Quanta launched a 13.2 MW photovoltaic farm for Volkswagen, spanning 22 hectares. The installation consists of 22,800 PV modules, each with a capacity of 590 W, and required 310 tons of structural materials and 102 km of cabling.
The new 3.1 MW installation, now under construction, will cover 4.3 hectares and utilize 5,300 photovoltaic modules. Installation of PV panels is set to begin shortly, with supporting structures already in place. Once complete, the two photovoltaic farms will collectively provide 16.3 MW of capacity, supplying over 20% of Volkswagen’s annual electricity needs for car production. On certain sunny days, the production line operates entirely on green energy generated by the installations.
Quanta Energy, a member of the R.Power Group, specializes in photovoltaic solutions across Poland, Germany, and Italy. It boasts a portfolio of over 2,600 completed projects and manages over 800 MW of renewable energy assets under development in Europe. R.Power, which has commercialized over 700 MW of PV capacity in countries such as Poland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Romania, and the Netherlands, recently issued PLN 530 million in green bonds.
Since 2018, Volkswagen’s Poznań facility has been powered entirely by renewable energy, a commitment extended to its Września plant in 2019. A PPA with Polenergia Obrót SA, signed in 2021, ensures over 1.2 TWh of wind energy supplies to Volkswagen plants across Poland, including facilities in Polkowice, Głogów, Słupsk, and Niepołomice.
