Türkiye’s EV Market Surges as Togg T10X Leads Sales
Türkiye’s electric vehicle (EV) market has experienced explosive growth, with the number of registered EVs increasing by 3,904% over the past year, reaching 131,217 by August 2024. When including hybrid vehicles, the total number of electric motor vehicles on Turkish roads has soared to approximately 450,000, marking a significant shift in the country's automotive landscape.
The surge is partly driven by the success of the domestically produced Togg T10X, which has become the top-selling EV in Türkiye, with 14,248 units sold between January and July 2024. Other popular models include the Tesla Model Y (3,502 units), SsangYong Torres EVX (2,597 units), BMW 5 Series (1,671 units), and BMW X1 (1,579 units).
As of August 2024, nearly 40 different fully electric car models were available in the Turkish market, offered by around 20 automotive manufacturers. Among the EVs with the longest range, the Mercedes-Benz EQS and Porsche Taycan lead with a 678-kilometer range, according to WLTP cycle measurements. The vehicles with the highest battery capacities include the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 (108 kWh) and Audi Q8 E-Tron (106 kWh). Meanwhile, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S is recognized for its rapid acceleration, reaching 0-100 km/h in just 2.4 seconds.
Despite these advancements, consumer concerns over driving range persist. A recent survey by Şarjagel.com revealed that many potential buyers believe an EV must have a range of at least 800 kilometers, and 80% of respondents expect a full charge to take no longer than 30 minutes. However, no EVs in Türkiye currently exceed a 700-kilometer range, highlighting the ongoing challenge of range anxiety.
