Turkey Challenges China's Solar Energy Dominance with Rapid Expansion
Turkey has added an impressive 4.7 GW of solar power capacity since the beginning of the year, positioning itself as a significant player in the global solar market. Major local companies like Kalyon Energy and Smart Solar Technologies are driving this growth, supported by substantial government subsidies and investment in domestic technology.
Kalyon Energy is expanding its solar module factory in Ankara with a $100 million investment and is working on a 390 MW photovoltaic project, backed by a €249 million loan guaranteed by UK Export Finance and Poland's KUKE. The project will see British and Polish companies supplying critical equipment.
Meanwhile, Smart Solar Technologies has commenced solar cell production at its new facility in Aliaga, Izmir, with a capacity of 800 MW annually. The company aims to penetrate the global market, including the US and EU.
Turkey's total installed solar capacity has now surpassed 16 GW, with a goal of reaching 32.9 GW by 2030. This rapid expansion is challenging China's dominance in the sector, with Turkey focusing on self-sufficiency and local production.
