Tauron Puts 58.5-MW Wind Farm in Mierzyn Online, Expands Renewable Portfolio
Polish utility Tauron Polska Energia SA (WSE) announced the commissioning of its 58.5-MW wind farm in Mierzyn, located in the West Pomeranian province. This newly operational facility comprises 15 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3.9 MW, and is expected to generate 160 GWh annually. The energy produced will meet the electricity needs of approximately 68,000 households while offsetting 140,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.
Construction of the Mierzyn wind farm commenced in March 2023, this marks the company’s 12th wind farm and raises its total onshore wind capacity to 506 MW, according to Michał Orłowski, vice-president of the management board.
Looking ahead, Tauron aims to further enhance its renewable energy capacity with the launch of two additional wind farms by the end of 2024: Warblewo (30 MW) and Gamow (33 MW). The utility is also progressing with the development of three more onshore wind projects – Miejska Gorka (190 MW), Sieradz (24 MW), and Nowa Brzeznica (20 MW).
In addition to its wind energy initiatives, Tauron is investing in solar power, currently constructing three photovoltaic (PV) farms with a combined capacity of 199 MW. The group’s renewable energy portfolio also includes 34 hydroelectric power plants, underscoring its diversified approach to clean energy production.
