SPAR Hungary boosts solar capacity with new investment in Pécs
SPAR Hungary has invested 80 million HUF (€204,714) to upgrade its INTERSPAR Hypermarket in Pécs with advanced photovoltaic systems and a smart battery storage unit. This investment, aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, follows the company’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.
The photovoltaic system installed at the Pécs hypermarket is designed to generate and store renewable energy, reducing the hypermarket’s reliance on the local electricity grid, particularly during peak consumption hours. This system also allows the store to save on energy costs by utilizing self-generated power.
In 2023, SPAR Hungary’s photovoltaic systems produced 779 GJ (216,419 kWh) of renewable energy across various stores. With this new installation in Pécs, the company expects to increase its renewable energy production significantly. The retailer’s broader sustainability efforts, including similar installations in Szeged, Dorog, and Göd, have already led to a 5.5% reduction in total energy consumption compared to the previous year.
Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary, emphasized the importance of these initiatives, highlighting the company’s dedication to improving energy efficiency across all its operations, including stores, logistics centers, food production plants, and offices.
