Romgaz and E.ON Partner to Build 500 MW Photovoltaic Park in Romania
Romanian state-owned gas producer Romgaz and German energy company E.ON have announced a partnership to develop a 500-megawatt (MW) photovoltaic park in Romania. The project, located in the southern region of the country, aims to significantly boost Romania's renewable energy capacity.
The partnership was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed on Tuesday. The photovoltaic park, which is set to be one of the largest in Romania, will cover an area of approximately 600 hectares and is expected to generate 750 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually, enough to power around 200,000 households.
"The collaboration with E.ON is a strategic step for Romgaz as we diversify our energy portfolio and invest in renewable energy sources," said Adrian Volintiru, CEO of Romgaz. "This project aligns with our commitment to support Romania's energy transition and reduce carbon emissions."
E.ON, which has a strong presence in the Romanian energy market, will bring its extensive experience in renewable energy projects to the partnership. "We are excited to work with Romgaz on this ambitious project," said Volker Raffel, CEO of E.ON Romania. "Together, we will contribute to Romania's sustainable energy future."
The photovoltaic park will employ advanced solar technology and is expected to create over 1,000 jobs during the construction phase. The project will also include a battery storage system to ensure a stable and reliable supply of electricity.
Romania aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 30% by 2030, in line with European Union targets. The Romgaz-E.ON partnership represents a significant step towards achieving this goal.
The construction of the photovoltaic park is scheduled to begin in early 2025, with the facility expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026. The project will involve an estimated investment of €600 million ($670 million).
