Romania's Politehnica Bucharest Secures 29 Million Lei Contract to Install Solar Systems Across Campuses
The National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest (UNSTPB) has signed a contract exceeding 29 million lei for the installation of photovoltaic systems on 56 campus buildings. Funded by the Modernization Fund Program and administered by the Ministry of Energy, this project is a significant leap toward renewable energy adoption in Romania’s higher education sector.
Titled "Assuring electricity through the installation of photovoltaic systems for self-consumption in UNSTPB buildings," the project is set to generate approximately 7,618 MWh of electricity annually. The energy produced will be distributed across the university's three campuses: Regie, Noul Local, and Leu, with a cumulative installed power of 7.04 MW. The breakdown includes 1,526 MWh/year for Regie, 5,458 MWh/year for Noul Local, and 632 MWh/year for Leu.
This initiative will substantially reduce the university's reliance on conventional energy sources, lower costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to the university, the installation of these systems will ensure a sustainable energy source, enhancing conditions in both accommodation spaces and lecture halls by improving energy efficiency.
During the contract signing, Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja and UNSTPB Rector Mihnea Costoiu underscored the project's importance. Costoiu noted that the Ministry's financial support reflects a strong commitment to helping public institutions transition to renewable energy and embrace innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
This project not only modernizes Politehnica Bucharest's infrastructure but also equips future engineers and specialists with the skills to tackle global energy challenges.
