Romania targets €11.5 billion for energy network modernization, aims for 1.2 GW storage capacity by 2030
Romania needs between €9.2 and €11.5 billion to modernize its energy transport and distribution networks and aims to reach a storage capacity of at least 1.2 GW by 2030, participants said at the “Infrastructure Development for Energy Production, Storage and Supply from Renewable Sources” conference, hosted by the Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Romania) in Bucharest.
Dan Drăgan, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Energy, noted that over €2 billion has been allocated to the transmission and distribution network, with €450 million earmarked for Transelectrica, and €1.3 billion assigned to the country's eight distribution areas. He highlighted Romania's focus on renewables, nuclear, and natural gas, adding that installed renewable capacity has reached 1.8 GW.
Drăgan also emphasized Romania's potential in hydro, biomass, geothermal, and the development of onshore and offshore wind energy. He outlined plans to add two CANDU nuclear units at Cernavodă by 2031, as well as the country's significant natural gas reserves, which will play a role in balancing renewable energy.
Sebastian Metz, AHK Romania’s Director, stated that €50 billion is required for the electricity network by 2030. The conference encouraged Romanian-German cooperation to meet these ambitious energy goals.
