Romania Launches €150 Million Battery Storage Investment Call to Boost Green Energy Use
Romania’s Ministry of Energy has announced a new €150 million funding call under the Modernisation Fund to support investments in battery storage, enabling the use of renewable energy even during periods without wind or sunlight. The initiative aims to enhance energy system balance and reduce costs for consumers, according to Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja.
"As promised, we have secured another €150 million in non-reimbursable funds from the Modernisation Fund to increase Romania's battery storage capacity. These projects will reduce energy bills, store more energy in the system, and improve balance," Burduja stated in a press release.
The funding is part of Key Programme 1, which focuses on renewable energy and storage. It targets electricity storage capacities connected to renewable energy facilities, including hydroelectric plants. The initiative follows the success of similar calls under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
Burduja emphasized the strategic importance of storage, calling it the "zero priority" for Romania's energy system. "This investment ensures greater energy independence, supports a competitive economy, and lowers bills for households and businesses. Investments like this will revolutionize Romania’s energy sector," he said.
Under his tenure, the Ministry has secured over €13 billion in non-reimbursable funds for energy projects.
