Polenergia and Equinor Secure Permit for Offshore Wind Farm in Poland

Polish energy company Polenergia and its Norwegian partner Equinor have received a permit to build a significant offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, according to a statement released on Wednesday. The project, named Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III, is set to be one of the largest offshore wind farms in Poland, with a combined capacity of 1.44 gigawatts (GW).

The permit, granted by Poland’s Ministry of Climate and Environment, allows Polenergia and Equinor to proceed with the construction and operation of the wind farm. The project is expected to begin construction in 2025 and start generating electricity by 2027.

"This is a major milestone for our offshore wind ambitions in Poland," said Michał Michalski, CEO of Polenergia. "Together with Equinor, we are committed to delivering clean, renewable energy to support Poland's energy transition and contribute to its climate goals."

The Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III wind farms will consist of approximately 120 turbines, each with a capacity of 12 megawatts (MW). The farms are expected to produce enough electricity to power over two million Polish households annually, significantly boosting the country's renewable energy capacity.

Equinor, a global leader in offshore wind, brings extensive experience and expertise to the project. "We are pleased to partner with Polenergia on this landmark project," said Pål Eitrheim, Executive Vice President of Equinor. "Our combined strengths will help Poland harness the vast potential of offshore wind energy."

The investment in the Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III projects is estimated at €4 billion ($4.5 billion). The projects are part of Poland's broader strategy to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 32% by 2030, in line with European Union targets.

This development underscores Poland’s commitment to diversifying its energy sources and reducing carbon emissions, while also creating job opportunities and stimulating economic growth in the region.
