Poland Explores Floating Solar Power Plant Development
Poland is set to embark on an innovative energy project by developing a floating solar power plant, a first for the country. The project, led by energy company SunGrids, aims to harness solar energy using photovoltaic panels installed on water surfaces.
The floating solar power plant, which will be located on a reservoir in the Masovian Voivodeship, is expected to generate 5 megawatts (MW) of electricity. This pioneering project will cover an area of approximately 10 hectares and will involve an investment of around PLN 25 million ($6.5 million).
"Floating solar power plants offer a unique solution to land scarcity and provide higher energy efficiency due to the cooling effect of water," said Marek Nowak, CEO of SunGrids. "This project represents a significant step towards diversifying Poland's renewable energy sources."
The project will be implemented in collaboration with several partners, including the Polish utility company PGE Energia Odnawialna and German engineering firm BELECTRIC. The development of the floating solar power plant will also receive financial support from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
"The integration of floating solar technology is crucial for Poland to meet its renewable energy targets," said Joanna Kowalska, Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment. "It showcases our commitment to innovative and sustainable energy solutions."
The floating solar power plant is expected to provide electricity to around 1,500 households and contribute to reducing carbon emissions by approximately 4,000 tons annually. The project will also create several job opportunities during its construction and operational phases.
SunGrids plans to complete the construction of the floating solar power plant by the end of 2025, with the facility expected to be fully operational by early 2026.
