Orlen Group to Begin Offshore Construction of Baltic Power Wind Farm in January
The Orlen Group announced that the offshore construction phase of the Baltic Power wind farm will commence in January 2024. Initial work will involve installing foundations to support over 230-meter wind turbines, which are expected to operate in the high seas for approximately 30 years.
Baltic Power, a 1.2 GW offshore wind farm jointly developed by Orlen Group and Northland Power, will consist of 76 turbines, each with a 15 MW capacity. Covering an area of around 130 km², the farm is projected to supply electricity to over 1.5 million households and contribute 3% of Poland's energy demand. Operations are set to begin in 2026, reducing Poland’s CO2 emissions by approximately 2.8 million tonnes annually.
The project is Poland’s most advanced offshore wind initiative and one of the first globally to utilize 15 MW turbines with towers partially made of renewable-energy-based steel.
Orlen Group, listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since 1999 and a WIG20 component, reported consolidated sales revenues of PLN 372.64 billion in 2023. The company operates refineries in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania, conducts mining activities in multiple countries, and has expanded into renewable energy and natural gas distribution through its acquisitions of Energa, Grupa Lotos, and PGNiG.
