IRENA Urges Faster Renewable Energy Deployment in the Balkans

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has called for an accelerated installation of renewable energy power plants in the Balkans to meet rising energy demands and climate goals. IRENA's Director-General Francesco La Camera emphasized the urgent need for investment and policy support to boost the region's renewable energy capacity.

Speaking at a regional energy conference in Belgrade, La Camera highlighted the Balkans' significant potential for renewable energy development, particularly in solar, wind, and hydropower. "We must scale up the deployment of renewable energy power plants and do so quickly," La Camera stated. "This is essential for ensuring energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and achieving sustainable development."

La Camera pointed out that despite progress in recent years, the pace of renewable energy projects in the Balkans remains insufficient. He urged governments to adopt more ambitious targets and streamline regulatory processes to attract investments. "The region has enormous untapped potential. With the right policies and investments, the Balkans can become a leader in renewable energy," he added.

The conference also featured discussions on the role of international financial institutions in supporting renewable energy projects. Representatives from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the World Bank reiterated their commitment to financing green energy initiatives in the region.

IRENA's call to action comes as the Balkans face increasing energy demands and pressure to transition to cleaner energy sources. The region's reliance on coal and other fossil fuels poses significant environmental and health challenges, making the shift to renewables crucial.

Several countries in the Balkans, including Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia, have already started to invest in renewable energy projects. However, La Camera stressed that more needs to be done to accelerate the transition and achieve climate targets.
