Hungary's Electric Vehicle Fleet Surges Nearly Ninefold Since 2010
Hungary now has over 68,000 fully electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads, marking nearly a ninefold increase compared to the start of the decade, according to a report by AutóSzektor citing the Ministry of Energy (EM). In the first 11 months of 2024 alone, the climate-friendly fleet expanded by nearly 20,000 new vehicles. Projections by the ministry indicate that this figure could climb to 120,000 EVs by 2026.
This year set records for EV adoption, with March seeing 2,108 new green license plates issued. Supporting this growth are government-backed initiatives totaling HUF 60 billion. Businesses have access to a HUF 30 billion fund to subsidize the purchase of fully electric vehicles, while rural charging infrastructure will benefit from a HUF 28 billion allocation. This funding is expected to establish over 100 new charging stations nationwide in the coming years, significantly enhancing EV convenience.
The shift toward green transportation has already delivered environmental benefits, with the transport sector's emissions decreasing by 7% in 2023. The government aims to further reduce the ecological impact of road transport through continued support for sustainable mobility, advancing its vision for a greener future.
