HSE to Supply Trbovlje, Hrastnik with Solar Power to Support Public Infrastructure
Slovenia’s power utility, Holding Slovenske Elektrarne (HSE), will sell 10% of the annual output from the expanded Prapretno solar power plant at cost price to the municipalities of Trbovlje and Hrastnik. This move aims to supply public buildings and reduce local energy costs.Trbovlje and Hrastnik, in the Zasavje region—once a coal industry hub—hosted the now-closed Trbovlje coal power plant and Trbovlje-Hrastnik coal mine. The Prapretno photovoltaic plant was built on a reclaimed landfill of the former Trbovlje thermal plant, signaling a shift to renewables.
HSE’s initial 3 MW Prapretno project launched in 2022. The second phase, set to finish by October 2025, will add 9.8 MW and a 7 MW battery storage system to enhance power management.“HSE has a key role in Slovenia’s green transition,” said HSE CEO Tomaž Štokelj, emphasizing the potential of the Zasavje region for renewables and aligning with national decarbonisation goals.HSE CBO Uroš Podobnik lauded the agreement, calling it a positive step for future projects.
“Today’s agreement advances our cooperation and sets a precedent for successful energy projects,” he said. Hydropower plans on the Sava River, including Suhadol, Trbovlje, and Renke, will be discussed in 2025.Trbovlje mayor Zoran Poznič noted the agreement’s benefits, saying it brings significant savings and supports sustainable development.
