Global Wind Day 2024 Highlights Wind Energy Sector
Global Wind Day 2024, observed on June 15, highlights the significant role of wind energy in the global energy transition. Initiated by WindEurope and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) in 2007, this annual celebration showcases wind energy’s economic and environmental benefits, aiming to raise awareness and promote the use of wind as a clean and renewable energy source.
In 2023, the global wind energy sector achieved a milestone by surpassing one terawatt of installed capacity. This remarkable achievement included 117 gigawatts of new installations, with China at the forefront, adding 75 gigawatts, which accounted for 65% of the new global capacity. Other significant contributors to this growth were the United States, Brazil, Germany, and India. Currently, wind power provides 20% of the European Union’s electricity, with a target to increase this share to 35% by 2030, reflecting the EU's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.
The wind energy sector is also a significant employer. In Europe alone, the industry employs 370,000 people, with projections indicating this number could rise to 500,000 by 2050 as the sector continues to expand. The #WorkingInWind campaign, launched on LinkedIn, is part of this year's Global Wind Day initiatives, aiming to highlight the diverse career opportunities within the industry. The campaign underscores the sector's potential for job creation, innovation, and sustainability, encouraging individuals to consider careers in wind energy.
Wind energy's environmental benefits are equally impressive. In Europe, wind power helps avoid the emission of 139 million tonnes of CO2 annually, playing a crucial role in the fight against global warming. Global Wind Day not only celebrates these achievements but also encourages the public to engage in discussions about the importance of wind energy, share their stories, and advocate for the expansion of wind power projects.
