Germany's Biga Hydrogen to Build Turkey's First Electrolyzer in Manisa OSB
Germany-based Biga Hydrogen is set to produce Turkey's first electrolyzer at Manisa OSB, marking a significant step in Turkey’s green hydrogen ambitions. In partnership with Estonia-based Stargate Hydrogen Solutions, Biga Hydrogen will deploy alkaline technology to create modular 1000 m³/h units, targeting heavy industry sectors in Manisa and Izmir. The project, starting in 2025 and scaling in 2026, aims to integrate hydrogen into various industrial processes, enhancing decarbonization efforts.
Turkey's green hydrogen potential is immense, with the government targeting 5,000 MW electrolyzer capacity by 2035 and 70,000 MW by 2053. The investment required for this ambitious goal is projected to reach €100 billion over the next 30 years. Despite this, only 4% of global hydrogen production is currently classified as green, highlighting the challenges ahead.
Stargate Hydrogen CEO Marko Virkebau expressed excitement about the partnership's potential impact on Turkey’s hydrogen industry. The collaboration aligns with Turkey's "Hydrogen Technologies Strategy and Roadmap" announced by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, which is crucial for achieving the country's net zero targets. However, investors urge the streamlining of regulatory processes, advocating for a single public authority to oversee green hydrogen initiatives.
The article emphasizes Turkey's strategic importance in the global green hydrogen landscape, with the nation's goals reflecting the broader push towards renewable energy and reduced carbon emissions.
