First Shipment of Windmill Components Arrives at Szczecin's Vestas Factory for Baltic Offshore Farms

The Vestas factory in Ostrów Brdowski, Szczecin, has commenced production of wind turbine nacelles for offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea. The first shipment of large-sized components arrived aboard the Polar Rock vessel, with Blue Water Shipping serving as the agent. The vessel was unloaded using Europe's largest port crane, which stands over 115 meters tall and has a maximum lifting capacity of 1,400 tons, according to Paweł Grządko of Blue Water Shipping.

Jagna Kubańska-Łyczakowska from Vestas Polska confirmed that four more similar shipments are expected this month. The components will be used for Vestas' V236-15 MW turbines, destined for the Baltic Power offshore wind farm. This project, a joint venture between PKN Orlen (51%) and Northland Power (49%), will consist of 76 turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW. Located 23 km off the Baltic coastline near Łeba and Choczewo, the farm will generate 4.4 TWh annually, meeting the electricity needs of over 1.5 million households.

The Szczecin factory, built on infrastructure acquired from ST3 Offshore for over PLN 170.5 million, employs around 700 people. Vestas plans to construct another factory in Szczecin by 2026 to produce turbine blades, creating over 1,000 additional jobs.
