Estonia Balances Offshore Wind Development with National Defense Concerns: Minister Pevkur
Estonia will continue developing offshore wind farms while addressing national defense concerns raised by the Estonia Defense Forces (EDF), according to Minister of Defense Hanno Pevkur. Discussions with EDF Intelligence Center chief Col. Ants Kiviselg and naval commander Cdr. Ivo Värk focused on mitigating potential impacts on surveillance, intelligence, and weapon systems.
Pevkur stated that while "western maritime surveillance" issues are manageable, concerns about wind farms affecting early warning systems and intelligence gathering in eastern Estonia remain under discussion. He emphasized that solutions, including compensatory measures, are being implemented, such as upgrading radar systems to maintain operational effectiveness.
Aidu's onshore wind farm in Ida-Viru County faced similar delays in the past due to radar interference concerns. However, advancements in radar and turbine technologies allowed the project to proceed. Pevkur noted that Estonia is carefully balancing its green energy goals with national security, mirroring Sweden's decision to halt offshore wind farms over defense risks, as highlighted by former EDF Commander Tarmo Kõuts.
By aligning renewable energy initiatives with defense priorities, Estonia aims to address EDF concerns while advancing its energy transition objectives.
