Engie Romania Inaugurates First Hybrid Renewable Energy Plant with 57 MW Capacity

Engie Romania announced on Wednesday the launch of its first hybrid power plant, combining wind and solar energy, with a total installed capacity of 57 MW. Located in Gemenele commune, Braila county, the facility is expected to generate 140 GWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power over 46,800 households.

This project brings Engie Romania’s total installed renewable capacity to 211 MW, strengthening its role in green energy production. The plant’s photovoltaic park, built over 14 hectares, features 17,100 bi-facial solar panels on trackers to enhance efficiency, contributing 9.3 MW to the system. The existing wind farm, with 47.5 MW capacity, is connected to the same network, creating one of Romania’s first hybrid power plants.

Engie Romania’s deputy general director, Cristian Buzan, noted that this investment supports businesses with long-term renewable energy contracts, aiding in carbon emissions reduction. The company also operates three wind farms in Braila, Constanta, and Galati, and five photovoltaic parks in Arad, Buzau, Harghita, and Teleorman, totaling 33 MW. In 2023, Engie also initiated a solar power plant project in Prahova county with 37.2 MW capacity.

Engie Romania serves 2.2 million customers, operates 23,255 km of gas distribution networks, and employs over 4,300 people. The group has invested 6.76 billion lei since 2005.
