California Surpasses 10 GW Milestone in Battery Energy Storage, Accelerating Clean Energy Transition
California has exceeded 10 GW of battery energy storage capacity, a major achievement in its clean energy transition. The state's capacity has surged by 1,250% in the last five years, with projections indicating a need for 52 GW to meet its 100% clean electricity goal by 2045. Developers plan to add 6,813 MW of storage capacity this year, primarily through four-hour lithium-ion systems.
Battery storage plays a crucial role in maintaining a reliable power grid, storing renewable energy for use during peak demand. Recently, battery storage became the largest source of power on the grid, surpassing gas, nuclear, hydro, and renewables. CAISO's latest plan proposes $6.1 billion in grid upgrades to accommodate 38 GW of new solar capacity paired with battery storage.
