BMW Group Plant Steyr Ships First Electric Engines to Debrecen for Neue Klasse Test Vehicles
In a significant milestone for BMW's transition to electrification, the first sixth-generation electric engine was shipped from BMW Group Plant Steyr to BMW Group Plant Debrecen in Hungary, where it will power Neue Klasse test vehicles. This achievement comes just ten months after system installation began at Steyr.
Klaus von Moltke, Senior Vice President of Engine Production at BMW AG and Managing Director of BMW Group Plant Steyr, highlighted the development: "Our plant in Steyr has been delivering the first sixth-generation electric engines to the development department in Munich since September. We also recently started sending our e-engines directly to BMW Group Plant Debrecen, where they are being installed in test vehicles."
Production of these next-generation electric motors began at Steyr three months ago. Helmut Hochsteiner, Vice President of Electric Engine Production at the plant, emphasized the ongoing work: "Over the coming months, we will continue to validate and optimize the complex production process for the new electric motors."
Steyr's role as a supplier for Debrecen underscores its critical position in BMW's electrification roadmap. The plant, which produces over one million petrol and diesel engines annually with a workforce of 4,700, also houses a major R&D center. In June 2022, BMW announced plans to begin e-drive production in Steyr by 2025, marking its evolution as a leader in Austria’s industrial landscape.
