BMW Breaks Ground on Hungary’s Largest Industrial Solar Power Plant in Debrecen

BMW has commenced the construction of its largest solar power plant within the BMW Group, located in Debrecen, Hungary. The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, marks another milestone in Hungary’s rise as a global leader in the green economy. According to Szijjártó, Hungary’s position is underpinned by the electrification of transport and the decarbonization of energy production, making the country a global standard-setter in these sectors.

The new solar park, spanning the size of 71 football fields, will serve over a quarter of the energy needs of BMW Manufacturing Hungary Kft., significantly integrating solar energy into BMW’s production processes. The facility will also be Hungary’s largest industrial solar power plant, underscoring the nation’s commitment to green energy.

Szijjártó highlighted Hungary’s success in the automotive industry, noting that it is home to Europe’s top electric motor and car manufacturers, as well as some of the world’s largest electric battery producers. Last year, the country’s automotive production surpassed 13,000 billion forints, ranking Hungary among the world’s top 20 automotive exporters for the sixth consecutive year.
