The Baltic Sea Hydrogen Valley project, a pioneering cross-border hydrogen initiative, has been distinguished by Poland's Minister of Climate and Environment, Paulina Hennig-Kloska. The project aims to establish a hydrogen valley spanning the Baltic Sea region, connecting Finland and Estonia with local valleys across Baltic nations.

The initiative targets an annual hydrogen production of nearly 50,000 tons by 2030, with over two-thirds allocated for methanol, ammonia, and industries such as chemicals, plastics, and refining. This marks significant progress compared to Europe’s total renewable hydrogen production of 30,000 tons in 2023.

Supported by a €33 million budget under the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the project includes €274,000 (over PLN 1 million) designated for the Lower Silesian Hydrogen Valley. Key figures such as Radosław Żydok, who accepted the award on behalf of the initiative, highlighted Poland’s role in advancing EU hydrogen initiatives and fostering international collaboration.

The Lower Silesian Hydrogen Valley’s involvement will deliver a forecast on hydrogen market growth in Europe by 2035, analyzing risks, barriers, and trends. Replication projects will be evaluated based on local factors like renewable energy availability and subsidies.

Notable initiatives presented during the 4th Hydrogen Agreement Conference included:

  • H2 Academy, Smart Cities, Hydrogen Quality Research Laboratory – ORLEN SA
  • Hydrogen Map of Poland – Gaz-System SA
  • Combustion Engine Adaptation to Hydrogen – Tadeusz Kościuszko University of Technology in Kraków
  • Hydrogen Furnaces – ArcelorMittal Poland SA
